. Salem-South Lyon District Library | Imagine the Possibilities

Go Green @ Your Library

Go GreenAt the Salem-South Lyon District Library we have been taking steps, big and small, to make a greener tomorrow.

The library is committed to encouraging our patrons and staff to recycle and has taken steps to make it as easy and convenient as possible. Paper recycling bins can be found throughout the library, including in the computer lab, all of the study rooms and in staff areas. The library also recently added a few new plastic recycling bins for visitors to dispose of plastic bottles (#1 and #2 only please).  Recycling isn’t just for paper and plastic though. Patrons can also recycle cell phones, eyeglasses, ink cartridges and batteries (provided the ends are taped to prevent fires). Our recycling efforts even extend to the Friends of Library book room where gently used books get a second life. Recycling is not only good for the environment, but for the library and the community. The library earns money for every ton of paper deposited in the green and yellow Abitibi bins located in the parking lot.

Protecting land and water resources is vital to the sustainability of our community and an important goal of the library. The Salem-South Lyon District Library recently became a member of Washtenaw County’s Community Partners for Clean Streams. CPCS is a voluntary, cooperative effort between the Washtenaw County Water Resources Commissioner's Office and Washtenaw County businesses and institutions. The goal of the program is to help identify practical, cost effective ways to protect Washtenaw County waterways through pollution prevention. CPCS is a cost-free initiative that provides information, technical advice and recognition to participants.

Small changes can also make a big impact. The library has switched out old light bulbs throughout the building for more energy efficient, compact fluorescent light bulbs. We have also added insulation to the study rooms to reduce noise and conserve heat.

The Salem-South Lyon District Library will continue to explore ways to reduce waste and increase awareness. Working together, we can make every day Earth Day!
